Trauma, EMDR and Healing
People may tell you that you “overreact” to situations. Perhaps you even feel like you overreact, but you can’t turn it off. You’re always waiting for something bad to happen and it feels like everything in your world is tainted by your past.
You may have lived for years thinking it was normal to always be on edge and always expect others to fail you. But now you realize there may be a different reality available to you. You see that not everyone “is like this” and you want to know if you really can experience a joyful life with satisfying and supportive relationships.
Your Brain Has Been Protecting You
Your brain has an amazing ability to heal and process everyday events. But if your brain is overwhelmed or traumatized, it isn’t able to process the event fully and the memory becomes fragmented, not allowing the event to heal. When that occurs, the memory becomes a trauma or psychological trauma inside the brain.
This often leads to struggling with disturbing thoughts, uncomfortable body sensations and overwhelming emotions when you think about the event or something else in your life reminds you of the experience.
That’s why at Purple Sky Counseling, we specialize in a well-researched therapy for trauma called EMDR.
“I tried so many different kinds of therapy. This worked for me. This let me heal. I feel more like me than I have in years. It no longer runs my life.”
EMDR Therapy for Trauma
EMDR (which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) allows the brain to reprocess the event in a way that lets it heal completely. It supports the brain and allows you to no longer relive and re-experience that moment in your life every time you think of it. Your thoughts, feelings and behaviors change, allowing you to be your whole self.
Traumatic experiences can happen to anyone and everyone handles these situations differently. Your brain can also experience any disturbing life event as a trauma if it is already overwhelmed.
“It was the most effective thing I have ever done. I was able to feel better about things that I have been carrying with me my whole life. I didn’t think they were problems, but then they were gone and I realized how much they had been affecting me. For me, it was absolutely life changing. ”
