Counseling for Children
No matter what they have experienced until now, your child can be successful when they have the opportunity to heal.
Your child may be struggling with recent changes in their life, such as a new school, loss of a loved one, or a new family situation. As a result, they may be experiencing new and overwhelming emotions.
Children experience all the emotions that adults do, such as sadness, depression, grief, anxiety, trauma, and more. The difference is that they often struggle to understand these emotions and they often express emotions differently than adults. This makes it difficult to know what is really going on with your child and talk with them about it.
What is most likely to happen is that you may see your child’s behaviors change in unexplained ways. For example, their emotions might be out of control when they were previously a “laid back” kid, or their sleeping habits might be interrupted although they’ve always been a great sleeper.
It can be hard to understand how to help your child, but the therapists here at Purple Sky Counseling are here to figure out what is going on and to create a plan that gets your family back on track.
These are some of the problems we commonly see in therapy with children:
Bullying or being bullied by others
Struggling at school, recent drop in grades
Difficulty making friends or interacting with peers
Trouble adjusting to recent life or family changes
Withdrawing from family members
Uncontrollable or misplaced anger
Difficulty managing and expressing emotions
Feelings of depression and anxiety
Nightmares and difficulty sleeping
Making statements about being worried that family members will leave or die
Our therapists are trained in working with children using play therapy. Why play therapy? Play is how kids engage, solve problems, and process their daily experiences. Through play therapy, we are able to teach emotional regulation skills, improve behaviors and communication skills, and increase your family’s ability to work together. If your child has experienced trauma they will work with one of our therapists specializing in trauma, EMDR and play therapy.
Sometimes the little people in our lives need more help than we can give them as parents. That’s okay, and that’s why we’re here.
We specialize in helping your child overcome their struggles so they can live a happy life and your family can function at its best.
