Grief: Understanding the Stages and Finding Support

What is Grief?

Stages of Grief

The stages of grief are often referred to as the 5 Stages of Grief, which were proposed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her book On Death and Dying. The 5 stages of grief include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. While these are the 5 stages that are most commonly discussed, it is important to note that grief is not a linear process, and individuals may not experience all of these stages. Additionally, individuals may move back and forth between the stages or experience them in a different order.

Denial: The first stage of grief is denial. During this stage, the individual may feel shock and disbelief and may try to avoid facing the reality of the loss. This is a protective mechanism that allows us to process the loss in a slow and manageable way.

Anger: In the second stage of grief, anger may become prominent. This can be directed at the deceased, at oneself, or at God. It is important to be aware that anger is a normal emotion and can be healthy if it is expressed in a constructive way.

Bargaining: The third stage of grief is bargaining. During this stage, an individual may feel a sense of hopelessness and may try to bargain with the deceased or with God in order to undo the loss.

Depression: In the fourth stage of grief, depression can become prominent. During this stage, an individual may experience feelings of sadness and emptiness. It is important to note that this is a normal and necessary part of the grieving process and that it is not a sign of mental illness.

Acceptance: The final stage of grief is acceptance. This is the stage where an individual is able to accept the reality of the loss and begin to move forward. It is important to note that acceptance does not mean that the pain and sadness of the loss have gone away. Rather, it is a recognition that life must go on.
