Tools for Navigating an LDS Faith Transition

At Purple Sky Counseling in Salt Lake County, we understand that navigating a faith transition can be a difficult and confusing process. It is our goal to provide support and resources to those who are struggling with their faith journey. In this blog post, we will discuss a few of the tools that can be used to help individuals through an LDS faith transition.

First and foremost, it is important to remember that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to go through a faith transition. Everyone’s journey is different and it is important to be respectful and understanding of each individual’s process. That being said, there are some tools that can be utilized to help make the transition a bit easier.

The first tool is education. Taking the time to learn more about the LDS Church and its teachings can help better understand the beliefs and doctrines. This can be done through reading books, attending classes, and talking to others who have gone through a similar transition. Education can also provide a better understanding of other faiths, which can be helpful in determining what resonates best with an individual.

The second tool is self-compassion. It is important to remember to take care of oneself during this time. This can include taking time for self-care activities, such as spending time outdoors, reading, or engaging in hobbies. Additionally, it is important to be gentle and understanding with oneself during this process. It can be helpful to practice mindfulness and meditation techniques to help manage any difficult feelings that may arise.

The third tool is support. Going through a faith transition can be a lonely and isolating experience. It can be beneficial to reach out to others who have gone through a similar experience or are in the process. This can be done through support groups, online forums, or speaking with counselors or therapists who specialize in faith transitions.

The fourth tool is journaling. Writing down thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be a helpful way of processing and understanding what is happening. It can also be beneficial to look back on at a later time and can provide insight into the process and progress.

The fifth tool is prayer. Even if an individual is no longer a believer in the LDS Church, prayer can still be a helpful tool for finding peace and understanding. It can be a way of connecting to a higher power and seeking guidance.

The sixth tool is creativity. Utilizing creative outlets such as art, music, or writing can be a helpful way of expressing and processing emotions. It can also be a way of finding a sense of purpose or identity in the midst of a faith transition.
